Luanda: The President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), F©lix Tshisekedi, called on Thursday in Luanda for urgent action toward a fairer, more representative, and balanced system of global governance.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the statesman argued at the third United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) initiative that the African continent must assume an active and decisive role in key global decision-making bodies. For the Congolese leader, reforming global governance should not be merely an abstract demand, but a requirement for legitimacy, effectiveness, and trust.
Tshisekedi warned that a multipolar world cannot be built upon institutions that fail to reflect the realities of peoples and regions, or the aspirations of the 21st century. He took the opportunity to announce that the DRC will assume the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council, noting that this international responsibility comes at a particularly challenging time marked by a proliferation of global crises.
The Congolese President affirmed that the message of respect for the rule of law, the equality of states, and conflict prevention delivered in Luanda is the same one his country will take to New York. F©lix Tshisekedi reaffirmed that the DRC speaks of peace not only because it knows the suffering caused by war, but because it believes in a future of stability and shared development for the entire region.
The third United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) initiative brings together heads of state and government, religious leaders, representatives of civil society and international organizations, and young people to discuss strategies for promoting peace, international cooperation, and conflict prevention. Its objectives include raising awareness about ending wars, mobilizing efforts for peaceful solutions, and strengthening respect for international law.
The initiative also aims to highlight the role of women, youth, and sport in conflict prevention and resolution, as well as to foster a culture of dialogue to replace militarization. Established in 2005 at the initiative of the United Nations, the Alliance of Civilizations seeks to reduce tensions between cultural and religious communities, promote intercultural dialogue, and combat extremism.
In 2022, the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) launched an initiative dedicated to the African continent, aiming to strengthen intercultural dialogue, promote peace, prevent extremism, and encourage sustainable development. The first edition of the African initiative took place in November of that same year in Fez, Morocco, and the second in August 2024 in Praia, Cabo Verde.
