Angolan Foreign Minister Pays Tribute to Oliver Tambo in Durban

Durban: Angolan Minister of Foreign Affairs Téte António on Monday laid a wreath at the statue of Oliver Tambo in Durban, South Africa, paying tribute to the historic South African leader and his contribution to the country's liberation and the promotion of social justice. According to Angola Press News Agency, the ceremony was attended by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Madagascar's President Colonel Michael Randrianirina, and Seychelles President Patrick Hermine, as well as representatives of the regional organisation's member states. For the South African authorities, the ceremony also paid tribute to the combatants who lost their lives in the struggle against the apartheid regime and for the freedom of the South African people. The event highlighted the role played by the countries of the then-called 'Front Line States', particularly Angola and Mozambique, in supporting South Africa's liberation struggle. The main items on the agenda of the 46th SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government in clude the organisation's financial situation, the implementation of decisions adopted by the Council of Ministers and the Summit, and resource mobilisation. The meeting of Heads of State and Government was preceded by the Meeting of the Council of Ministers and the Standing Committee of Senior Officials, during which South Africa assumed the chairmanship of the Standing Committee and subsequently the regional organisation. Oliver Reginald Tambo was one of the leading figures in the struggle against apartheid and for the liberation of South Africa. He served as president of the African National Congress (ANC) during the organisation's period in exile.
