Angolan President Pays Tribute to Algerian Liberation Fighters at Iconic Algiers Monument

Algiers: Angolan President Joo Louren§o laid a wreath on Monday afternoon at the Maqam Echahid Martyrs' Sanctuary in Algiers in homage to the fighters of the Algerian liberation struggle against French colonialism. The gesture marked the beginning of the agenda for the three-day visit that the Angolan Head of State is making to Algeria, within the framework of strengthening bilateral cooperation.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the Maqam Echahid is an iconic 92-meter-high concrete monument, built in 1982 to honor the martyrs in the Algerian War of Independence. Shaped like three stylized palm leaves, the monument is a national symbol of sovereignty and dignity. Located in the Hamma hills in Algiers, the complex offers panoramic views over the Algerian capital.

After the wreath-laying ceremony, President Joo Louren§o visited the Moudjahid National Museum, located beneath the monument itself. The space constitutes one of the main historical landmarks of Algeria, dedicated to the memory of the resistance to colonialism in the period from 1830 to 1962, including the Popular Resistance, the National Movement, and the National Revolution. The museum brings together historical objects linked to the liberation struggle, such as weapons, uniforms, and archival documents, as well as personal items from figures such as Emir Abdelkader and Larbi Ben M'hidi.

Joo Louren§o will hold a private meeting with the Algerian President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, at the Presidential Palace. Meetings between ministerial delegations are also planned, which should culminate in the signing of several agreements in areas considered strategic. The State visit takes place within the framework of diplomatic relations established between Angola and Algeria since 1976, with cooperation in sectors such as energy, oil and gas, mineral resources, agriculture, transport, defense, and technical-professional training.
