Dori: An artificial insemination campaign to modernize cattle farming in the Sahel region has been launched by the Sahel Regional Directorate of Agriculture, Animal Resources and Fisheries. The initiative, which began on Thursday, July 24, 2025, is part of the 2023-2025 agro-pastoral and fisheries offensive, aiming to inseminate 900 cows to improve meat and milk production.
According to Burkina Information Agency, Mr. Y© Abidiasse, the regional director in charge of agriculture, animal resources, and fisheries, stated that the operation is part of a structural transformation of the livestock sector. The goal is to establish a modern, productive, competitive, and resilient livestock system. He emphasized the campaign's role in achieving sustainable food sovereignty amid security and climate challenges.
The insemination cost is approximately 75,000 CFA francs per cow, but the state-backed initiative subsidizes 70,000 CFA francs, reducing the farmers' contribution to 5,000 CFA francs. This policy aims to encourage more farmers to adopt this technology. In the initial two days, around forty cows were inseminated.
A livestock technician, speaking anonymously, explained that artificial insemination synchronizes the heats of several cows and introduces sperm from high-performing bulls, which is stored under specific conditions. This method improves birth planning, enhances herd genetics, and minimizes the risk of zoonotic disease transmission.
The campaign addresses challenges faced by breeders who have lost breeding males due to insecurity, complicating natural reproduction. Artificial insemination offers a viable solution to preserve livestock and maintain productivity. The regional director encouraged breeders to support the initiative to modernize and make their farms profitable.
The artificial insemination campaign provides a crucial opportunity for livestock farmers dealing with the effects of insecurity and climate change. By making modern reproductive technologies accessible, it serves as a significant tool for sustainably revitalizing the livestock sector, a vital component of the local and national economy.
