Luanda: The body of 32-year-old Angolan student Faustino Paulo Muetunda, who tragically drowned in a dam in Portugal, is scheduled to arrive in Luanda on Friday. Muetunda, a native of Huila province, was studying at the University Beira Interior (UBI) when the incident occurred. The family has been actively working to repatriate his body back to Angola for his final rites, as confirmed by a family source to ANGOP.
According to Angola Press News Agency, Muetunda drowned in an agricultural dam on the Corges river, located in the Canhoso locality of Covilh, on March 31. The family has organized the necessary arrangements to ensure the coffin with Muetunda's body is brought back to his home country. Upon arriving at Antonio Agostinho Neto airport, the body will be transported to Lubango, where a wake will be held at the local Cultural Center.
The burial ceremony is planned to occur on Saturday morning at the Mutundo cemetery, located on the outskirts of the Huila capital. Muetunda was pursuing a PhD in Computer Engineering and was out with friends when he decided to swim. A friend recounted that Muetunda dived into the water with a colleague but disappeared shortly after, prompting the group to alert local rescue services.
The search operation, led by the Portuguese Civil Protection, involved numerous resources, including divers from the firefighters' unit. The team successfully located Muetunda's body two hours after the alert was raised.
