Celebrations for Djerba’s inscription on World Heritage List, still on

Celebrations for the inscription of the Djerba Island on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, which kicked off in Houmt Essouk, are now continuing at the City of Culture in Tunis.

The Island of Djerba, a serial site comprising 7 zones and 24 monuments, was inscribed on the World Heritage List on September 18, 2023, becoming the 9th Tunisian site to be listed.

The City of Culture’s various halls hosted on Friday evening several events organised by the Tunis Opera Theatre, in partnership with the Agency for the Development of Heritage and Cultural Promotion (AMVPPC).

An official ceremony was held in the presence of Cultural Affairs Minister Hayet Ketat Guermazi, Advisor to the President of the Republic Walid Hajjem, Diplomatic Affairs Advisor to the Prime Minister Riadh Essid and several ambassadors and representatives of diplomatic missions accredited in Tunisia.

Guermazi underscored on the occasion, “the importance of Djerba’s inscription on the World Heritage List, as this is a global recognition of the island’s exceptional cultural and historical value.”

Folklore shows were performed on the occasion, by the Awled Jmour and Sta Jomaa troupes.

A short documentary about the exceptional island town planning that developed between the 10th and 18th centuries in Djerba was also screened.

The Tunis City of Culture further hosted a photographic exhibition showcasing the island’s listed sites and monuments, such as Houmt Essouk, the mosques, the Ghriba synagogue and other images capturing the islanders’ lifestyle.
