Luanda: The minister of National Defence, Former Combatants and Veterans of the Homeland, Joao Ernesto dos Santos 'Liberdade', on Tuesday in Luanda congratulated the Army on the occasion of its 34th anniversary, marked on Wednesday (17th). In his public message, the minister highlighted the celebration as a moment for reflecting on the role of the land troops as guardians of national borders.
According to Angola Press News Agency, Joao Ernesto dos Santos Liberdade recalled the refounding of the Angolan Armed Forces in 1991, following the Bicesse Peace Accords, and emphasized the Army's historical legacy from the former People's Armed Forces of Liberation of Angola (FAPLA). He noted that this legacy contributed significantly to the affirmation of the Angolan State, which recently celebrated 50 years of National Independence on November 11.
The Defence Minister reiterated the commitment of the Ministry of National Defence to ensure the administration and development of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA), particularly the Army. He urged the personnel to enhance their combat, operational, and educational preparedness. The message also extended wishes of success to all members of the Army in serving the Nation and defending national territory.
The Army, the largest branch of the Angolan Armed Forces, was established on December 17, 1991, under the Bicesse Accords in Estoril, Portugal, between the Angolan government and UNITA. It symbolizes national unity and reconciliation, integrating personnel from both sides and operating on a non-partisan basis. The Army's primary mission is the defense of national land territory, with additional roles in supporting social infrastructure and population well-being.
Under agreements with international organizations like the United Nations (UN), the African Union (AU), and others, the Army provides resources for humanitarian aid and peacekeeping missions. Education is a cornerstone of the Army's modernization, incorporating academic and technical-military components to enhance military personnel's skills and development.
The Army's educational framework includes four schools offering vocational technical courses, aimed at developing human resources for effective military service. Higher education institutions like the Military Academy and the Higher Military Institute train officers and personnel from multilateral organizations, equipping them with the necessary skills for their roles in the Army.
