Diamond Sector Accounts for 35pct of Mining Rights in Angola

Luanda: The National Agency for Mineral Resources (ANRM) controls 165 titles issued for the diamond segment, representing 35.3 percent of the 467 mining licenses granted nationwide.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the agency's statistical report was presented on Tuesday in Luanda by senior technician Luzayadio Dikiesse, highlighting the growth of the sector by one new title compared to the same period last year, bringing the total number of valid projects to 91.

The report detailed that out of these 91 projects, 53 are dedicated to prospecting, reconnaissance, and geological research activities, while 38 are focused on exploration activities, specifically extraction and processing. Additionally, the report noted that there are 74 expired titles in the diamond sector, with 12 for prospecting and 62 for exploration; some of these are currently in the process of being renewed.

Geospatial analysis from ANRM indicates that the Lunda Norte province remains dominant in diamond concessions, with 49 total concessions-27 for prospecting and 22 for exploration. Lunda Sul follows with 20 projects and Malanje with 11. The report also identifies diamond sector activities in the provinces of Cuanza Sul (5), Bi© (4), Huambo (1), and Hula (1).

Out of the 91 active projects, 46 are fully operational, 18 are in the prospecting phase, 28 are in the exploration phase, and 27 are in the mobilisation phase. Additionally, 20 projects are undergoing restructuring, while four projects remain paralysed.

Luzayadio Diakiesse highlighted a recent modification by ANRM in the mining rights for the Funda Project, transitioning it from the prospecting to the exploration phase. Despite the sector's growth, Diakiesse expressed concerns about companies failing to submit activity reports. The ANRM reiterates the obligation for exploration rights holders to submit updated workforce and operational development data.
