Heavy Rains Cause Extensive Damage to Yad©ga High School in Ouahigouya

Ouahigouya: Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds struck the city of Ouahigouya from Saturday night into Sunday, resulting in significant material damage, particularly affecting Yad©ga High School. The school's administrative block and nine classrooms have been rendered unusable, as noted by the AIB.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the meteorological services reported that the city of Naaba Kango recorded approximately 60 millimeters of rain on the morning of July 27. This extreme weather event has severely impacted various areas within the city, notably the central market and Yad©ga High School, a public secondary school established during the colonial era, which had an enrollment of 1,897 students by the end of the 2024-2025 academic year.

The aftermath of the storm painted a grim picture: the ground was strewn with concrete blocks, torn sheet metal, and twisted scrap metal, highlighting the storm's intensity. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, but the material losses remain significant and concerning.

Sidsor© Simon Ou©draogo, the school principal, provided an initial damage assessment, noting that six administrative offices were affected, damaging documents and computer equipment. Additionally, nine classrooms were destroyed, along with the school kitchen hall and part of the parking lot.

"I thank our management, which quickly mobilized to assess the damage. But today, we need urgent support, particularly in office equipment, to enable the administration to function during this crucial period of preparation for the 2025-2026 school year," stated Mr. Ou©draogo.

The principal is appealing for support from parents, local residents, and influential figures in the Yatenga region. He has also submitted a grievance to the Association for Economic and Social Development of the North, while awaiting more structured assistance from the state.
