MPLA President Envisions a Just Angola with Empowered Women

Luanda: The president of the ruling MPLA, Joo Lourenço, advocated for a more just, prosperous, and stable Angola, emphasizing the empowerment, education, and economic activity of women. He made these remarks during the opening of the 8th Congress of the MPLA women's wing, the Angolan Women's Organization (OMA), where he acknowledged the central role of Angolan women in national transformation. According to Angola Press News Agency, Lourenço highlighted that the progress of women strengthens the country and consolidates Angola's path toward stability, development, and the preservation of national sovereignty. He stressed the importance of enhancing OMA's role in electoral mobilization, political training, supporting female entrepreneurship, promoting family farming, transitioning from informal to formal economy, and creating economic solidarity networks to promote women's autonomy. The MPLA leader also recognized the contributions of outgoing OMA Secretary-General, Joana Tomás, in advancing the ideals of the MPLA's women's organization, and extended gratitude to former leaders Ruty Neto and Luzia Ingles Van-Dúnem. In his address, Lourenço recalled the peace and stability Angola enjoys today, attributing it in part to international solidarity during the struggle for independence and sovereignty, as well as in national reconstruction. He expressed solidarity with the women of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, Ukraine, and Palestine, particularly in the Gaza Strip, who are enduring the consequences of war. Lourenço expressed hope that peace will eventually prevail in these regions, leading to economic and social development. He expects the congress to establish clear guidelines, legitimate leadership, and a mobilizing political agenda to transform challenges into achievements for women and the Angolan people. The 8th OMA Congress, gathering over 2,000 delegates from across the country and the diaspora, is held under the theme of strengthening the organization, promoting gender equality, and enhancing women 's contributions to Angola's sustainable development.
