Luanda: The President of the ruling MPLA, Joo Louren§o, has urged the Organization of Angolan Women (OMA), the party's women's wing, to reinforce its commitment to defending women's dignity and tackling critical social issues such as gender-based violence.
According to Angola Press News Agency, during the 8th OMA Congress, the MPLA leader addressed the importance of fostering women's economic autonomy, enhancing access to education and health services, securing decent employment, and promoting effective participation in decision-making and power structures. He emphasized the necessity for OMA to act decisively against injustices faced by women, advocating for political resolve, civic bravery, and social mobilization.
Louren§o stressed that the congress's theme, 'Angolan Women United to Transform Challenges into Achievements,' represents a tangible commitment to societal change. He highlighted the OMA's pivotal role as a partner in combating poverty, unemployment, social inequality, and violence affecting women, children, and the elderly, while also working to prevent economic and social exclusion.
The President acknowledged OMA's contributions to literacy initiatives, addressing early pregnancies among adolescents, and mitigating their repercussions. He underscored the organization's efforts in preventing school dropouts and promoting sex education and family planning. Additionally, he urged the OMA to oppose harmful family customs, such as the expulsion of children accused of witchcraft, and to take a firm stand against female genital mutilation, denouncing any cultural or religious justifications for such practices.
Louren§o concluded by recognizing the transformative impact of organized women, valuing their historical contributions and alignment with the country's political vision.
