Luanda: The president of the ruling MPLA, Joo Louren§o, emphasized the critical role of gender equality in sustainable development and democracy during the 8th Congress of the Angolan Woman's Organization (OMA). He highlighted the necessity of female leadership in politics, the economy, and community life to drive profound social transformation.
According to Angola Press News Agency, Louren§o stressed the need for increased female participation in governing bodies and decision-making processes to strengthen the democratic rule of law. Despite progress, Angolan women face ongoing challenges, which he believes should be addressed through public and social policies that promote equal opportunities.
Louren§o acknowledged women's direct influence, deeming their political participation essential for historical justice, democratic legitimacy, and quality governance. He urged OMA to enhance its role in electoral mobilization, political training, entrepreneurship support, and economic solidarity to empower women.
The President of the MPLA underscored the importance of women in national transformation, asserting that women's advancement leads to a stronger and more stable Angola. He reflected on Angola's peaceful state and commitment to social inclusion and recognized women's role in building the nation's future.
The congress will elect a new secretary-general and outline strategic guidelines for the 2026-2031 term, with Carlota Dias as the sole candidate for Secretary-General. Delegates will also review and approve new statutes and action programs for the next five years.
The event serves as a reflection on OMA's 64-year history and its contribution to socio-economic development and political mobilization. Founded in 1962, OMA focuses on women's emancipation and active participation in Angola's political, social, and economic spheres. Priorities include combating domestic violence and child rape, promoting literacy, and enhancing civic awareness.
