Malanje: Over 28,000 pigs are currently being bred in the northern region of Malanje, as disclosed by Marcos Nhunga, the governor of Malanje, during a recent address to the Provincial Council for Community Consultation. Nhunga highlighted that the agro-livestock farm in the municipality of Pungo Andongo produces 30,000 pigs and slaughters 100 of them daily.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the farm is privately owned and has achieved self-sustainability by producing feed for its breeding sows. Malanje has taken the lead in the nation's pig production, contributing significantly to the government's efforts to reduce pork imports. The province is home to 136 farms, both business and family-owned, boasting a herd of 78,037 pigs, 41,972 head of cattle, 369,795 goats, 15,742 sheep, and 930,725 poultry.
Governor Nhunga expressed optimism about Malanje's continued prominence as a major production region nationally, with a focus on cotton, cassava, and corn. Rice is also gaining traction in the province, noted for its quality. He mentioned that at least 2,000 tons of rice, owned by family and business farmers, are ready for shipping, with the Ministry of Industry and Commerce working to resolve production outflow issues.
The council meeting also reviewed the government's past year's activities and discussed the state budget for 2026, alongside revenue collection and other pertinent issues.
