Algiers: Angolan President Joo Louren§o arrived on Monday in Algiers, the capital of Algeria, for a three-day state visit, as part of strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries. Upon arrival at Houari Boumedienne International Airport, the Angolan Head of State, accompanied by the First Lady of the Republic, Ana Dias Louren§o, was received with military honors.
According to Angola Press News Agency, after leaving the airport, Joo Louren§o will visit the Martyr Memorial 'Maqam Echahid' and the National Museum of Moudjahid, historical landmarks of the Algerian liberation struggle, at the start of the official agenda. The program also includes official talks between the delegations of the two countries, with a highlight being a private meeting between Joo Louren§o and Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
The meetings are expected to culminate in the signing of several legal instruments of cooperation in sectors considered strategic for both States. During his stay in Algeria, the Angolan President will address members of both chambers of the Algerian Parliament on Tuesday, as part of deepening institutional relations between Luanda and Algiers.
The agenda also includes a visit to a seawater desalination plant, an experience considered relevant for Angola, given the challenges related to water supply and the use of the country's extensive coastline. Angola and Algeria diplomatic relations date back since 1976 and cooperate in sectors such as energy, oil and gas, mineral resources, agriculture, education, transport, defense, and technical and vocational training.
In recent years, the two countries have intensified political consultations and bilateral meetings, notably with the signing, in April 2025, of a Memorandum of Understanding on the creation of a Political Consultation Mechanism. The two states also maintain concerted positions within the African Union and the United Nations on matters related to peace, security, and stability on the African continent.
