Belgrade: Joo Louren§o, President of Angola, advocated for a new phase in Angola-Serbia relations centered on economic cooperation and increased private investments. This announcement came during his official visit to Belgrade, following discussions with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and the signing of ten cooperation agreements.
According to Angola Press News Agency, Louren§o emphasized that the ties between Angola and Serbia date back to the national liberation struggle, where the former Yugoslavia supported Angola's cause. He expressed Angola's enduring gratitude for this solidarity, which was also acknowledged during the 50th anniversary celebrations of Angola's National Independence.
Louren§o stated that the historical friendship between the two countries should now yield tangible economic results. He noted that the current level of economic cooperation is insufficient, which is why his visit aims to rejuvenate bilateral relations. The signing of agreements, particularly those focused on eliminating double taxation and protecting private investments, was highlighted as a step towards realizing this vision.
The President expressed confidence that these agreements would foster a favorable environment for investors in both nations. He encouraged investments based on feasibility studies, particularly in sectors such as higher education, agriculture, ICT, and tourism. Louren§o underscored Angola's agricultural potential, positioning the country as a potential agricultural leader in Africa, contributing to both domestic and global food security.
In addition, Louren§o pointed to Angola's tourism potential and its benefits for both the nation and the international community. He advocated for private investments in agriculture and tourism to enhance Angola's role in ensuring food and energy security globally.
Highlighting the defense sector's growing importance amidst new security challenges, Louren§o expressed interest in deepening defense cooperation with Serbia. He announced that the Angolan delegation will tour the Serbian Military Technical Institute to explore Serbia's capabilities in military equipment modernization.
