President Louren§o Updates Electoral Registration in Luanda

Luanda: The President of the Republic, Joo Louren§o, updated his electoral registration data on Monday at the Ingombota Municipal Administration in Luanda, as part of the preparatory process for the general elections scheduled for 2027. The Angolan Head of State was accompanied by the First Lady of the Republic, Ana Dias Louren§o, who also updated her electoral data.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the presidential couple presented their respective Identity Cards to the operators of the Single Public Service Counters (BUAP), structures responsible for updating the electoral register throughout the country. The national process of updating the electoral register officially began today, June 15, 2026, and will run until March 31, 2027, with the aim of preparing for the general elections in Angola.

The Angolan Executive plans to include more than 16 million national citizens over 18 years of age, residing in the country and abroad, in an estimated universe of approximately 16.7 million voters. The update is being carried out through the "proof of life" system, a mechanism designed to confirm the physical existence of individuals and update their data in the electoral register. The process is taking place at the BUAP (Unified Voter Registration Points) installed in municipal and communal administrations, as well as in Angolan diplomatic and consular missions abroad.

In total, 634 service points are planned throughout the national territory, of which 254 have become operational in this first phase. More than 10,000 brigade members have been mobilized to ensure the electoral update process. In Luanda, the operation began in all municipalities, while in the remaining provinces the process began, in a first phase, in three municipalities in each of them.

The authorities clarified that there will be no issuance of new voter cards, only an update of the national citizens' data in the electoral system. With this measure, the Angolan Government intends to strengthen the reliability of the electoral database, reduce abstention levels, and ensure greater participation of national citizens in the 2027 general elections, intended for the election of the President of the Republic and the 220 deputies to the National Assembly.
