Segregation Works on Luanda Railway Section Near Completion

Luanda: The segregation works of the Luanda Railway (CFL), on the Bungo - Dr. Ant³nio Agostinho Neto International Airport (AIAAN) railway section, have reached a physical execution rate of 87.4 percent, announced the Minister of Transport on Wednesday.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the governor traveled the entire length of the track, in both directions, by train to assess the technical and safety conditions with a view to reopening rail traffic on this strategic route. The CFL segregation project aims to ensure greater fluidity and safety in train circulation by eliminating conflicts between rail and road/pedestrian traffic, significantly improving urban mobility in the Angolan capital and access to the new international airport.

The current progress is attributed to advancements on several work fronts, with particular emphasis on pedestrian overpasses. One of the 15 planned pedestrian crossings has been completed, and 12 of the 27 structures slated for rehabilitation have been fully restored. However, the release of spaces in the municipalities of Ingombota, Sambizanga, Rangel, Cazenga, and the Mulenvos area remains a significant challenge to completing pedestrian crossings P1, P2, P4, P5, and P8.

"It is essential to overcome the remaining obstacles, namely by completing the processes of freeing up spaces and strengthening security against acts of vandalism," the minister stated.

The document highlights several constraints observed during the field visit, including damage due to vandalism and waste along the section, which affects the work schedule as a result of the frequent theft of barbed wire and metal props intended for the railway perimeter fence. Another issue is the disorderly deposit of solid waste along the corridor, especially near the protective walls and rehabilitation areas.

To address these challenges, the Minister of Transport suggests improved coordination with municipal administrations and public order forces to enhance surveillance and ensure the integrity of the infrastructure.
