Shipbuilding Industry Launches First Locally Produced Aluminum Vessel

Luanda: The first aluminum vessel designed and built in Angola was officially launched on Friday in Luanda, aiming to bolster the country's maritime security. Named the "MV Malongo," the first of the Tombwa 50 class-the vessel was built over 14 months by the Kianda Estaleiro Naval shipyard. It will operate for the private security firm Teleservice, serving Sonangol Exploration and Production's oil blocks 3 and 4.

According to Angola Press News Agency, with an initial budget of five million dollars, the vessel has the range to travel between Luanda and Cabinda without needing to refuel. Transport Minister Ricardo de Abreu stated that the launch demonstrates that Angolan engineering, industry, and expertise are ready to meet the demands of the national economy's strategic sectors. This moment highlights Angola's commitment to developing an economy capable of increasing production, incorporating knowledge, developing technology, and creating greater added value.

"In a country with approximately 1,600 kilometers of Atlantic coastline, establishing a strong maritime economy also depends on the ability to develop a robust, innovative, and competitive shipbuilding industry," he emphasized. He reaffirmed the Angolan government's commitment to promoting policies that stimulate productive investment, strengthen the country's industrial capacity, and create conditions for more companies to invest in innovation, domestic production, and the development of Angolan talent.

Meanwhile, Jos© Figueiredo, Director-General of Kianda Estaleiro Naval, explained that the vessel can travel more than 1,000 miles without refueling. He noted that, prior to commencing operations, the boat will undergo certification, registration, and official flagging tests, a process expected to take between 15 and 20 days. He announced that the next Tombwa-class vessel will be launched in October of this year.

The official launch ceremony for the vessel was presided over by the Minister of State for Economic Coordination, Jos© de Lima Massano.
