Luanda: Since 2022, the Tourism Promotion Agency Tac Tour has gathered at least 10,000 books through donations from foreign tourists, aiming to enhance literary tourism in Angola. This effort, initiated four years ago, seeks to enrich the cultural landscape of the country.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the donated books originate from Portugal, Italy, Spain, France, and Brazil. These literary contributions are in the final stages of being distributed to libraries located in Luanda, Namibe, Hula, and Benguela-provinces that form part of Angola's literary tourism route, a project developed by Tac Tour.
This initiative marks the first literary tourism experience in Angola and involves collaborations with the Ministries of Culture, Tourism, and Education, alongside partnerships with the Ministry of Tourism of Portugal and the Brazilian Embassy in Angola. The books, primarily in Portuguese, cover a range of themes including novels, medical records, grammars, encyclopedias, and subjects like biology, geography, astronomy, astrology, fiction, and poetry.
Carlos Bumba, head of Tac Tour, shared insights with ANGOP about the project's progress. He noted that literary tourism has experienced gradual growth, with activities such as walks and literary caf©s already attracting over 180 national and international tourists. In Luanda, the books have been distributed to three libraries, while in Hula and Namibe, they have been delivered to one each. In Benguela, preparations for installation are underway, and these locations also host the literary caf©s.
Bumba also mentioned future plans, including the creation of an ecological library in a garden donated to the Tucker family in Lubango, with books from the United States. Additionally, there are intentions to establish literary tourism rooms in the municipalities of Chibia, Caconda, and Humpata, as expressed by local managers.
