Luanda: The UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), James Swan, has proposed stronger coordination between African and international diplomatic efforts to ensure lasting peace in the eastern region of the DRC. This proposal was announced after Swan's meeting with the President of Angola, Joo Louren§o, where he expressed gratitude to the Angolan authorities for their support in mediation and stabilization efforts in the Great Lakes region.
According to Angola Press News Agency, James Swan's visit to Luanda is part of a series of regional consultations with African partners involved in the peace processes in the DRC. These consultations are crucial for the implementation of the mandate of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO).
Swan revealed that he has held recent meetings with African mediators and representatives of the African Union. These discussions are part of ongoing efforts to restore stability in eastern Congo. The talks in Luanda underscored the necessity of harmonizing peace processes led by Washington, Doha, and the African Union, aiming to consolidate security in the DRC.
The head of MONUSCO emphasized the United Nations' commitment to supporting the implementation, monitoring, and verification of ceasefire agreements, as outlined in UN Security Council Resolution 2808/2025. He also highlighted the role of the Extended Joint Verification Mechanism, noting that MONUSCO continues to provide essential technical and operational support.
Additionally, James Swan commended Angola for its significant efforts over the years in promoting peace, security, and stability in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the broader African region.
