Bridge International Academies celebrates potential of all African children on Day of the African Child

Bridge International Academies School

NAIROBI, Kenya, June 15, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Bridge International Academies is marking the Day of the African Child by celebrating the potential of each and every child in Africa.

The school network, which includes Bridge Kenya, Bridge Nigeria and Bridge Uganda, supports children and parents in underprivileged communities through quality education.

The day, commemorating a series of demonstrations and protests in 1976 led by thousands of South African school children, is synonymous with taking action in education, and 2023 marks a historic opportunity that if missed will be a great loss for Africa and the world.

2023 is the year when Sub-Saharan Africa leads the world as the region with the most young people (0-14) – the size and acceleration of this age cohort are historically unprecedented. Additionally, 60% of the region’s population is under 25 years of age.

Reuben Wambugu, Bridge Group Managing Director, said, “This demographic tipping point marks a historic moment of opportunity. With effective education, a skilled and energised future labour force could emerge from Africa and drive transformation both on the continent and around the world. Crippling rates of learning poverty threaten to derail this prospect however. Only 10% of children in sub-Saharan Africa are able to read a simple sentence by the age of 10.”

recent study in Kenya of Bridge International Academies pedagogies, led by Nobel Prize winning economist Professor Michael Kremer, confirmed its “highly standardised education has the potential to produce dramatic learning gains at scale.”

Speaking on the success of Bridge’s methods, Bridge Nigeria Managing Director, Foyinsola Akinjayeju, said, “Bridge Nigeria schools produce some of the top students in the Nigeria National Common Entrance Exam. 80% perform above the average sample for literacy compared to just 18% in public schools. For eight years now Bridge Kenya pupils too have exceeded the national average in their primary school exit exam. With results like these it is clear that all African children can and must benefit from access to a quality education which drives learning. Their potential is unlimited. All African parents want their children to learn. Bridge International Academies is supporting thousands of them to do so.”

Hitachi Energy wins order for first subsea electricity interconnection between France and Spain

HVDC link improves the security and quality of power in the region, advancing the integration of emission-free energy

Zurich, Switzerland, June 15, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Hitachi Energy, a global technology leader that is advancing a sustainable energy future for all, today announced it won an order from Electricity Interconnection France-Spain (Inelfe), the joint venture bringing together operators of the Spanish (Red Eléctrica) and French (RTE) electricity transmission networks, in charge of the construction and commissioning of all cross-border connections between both countries, to supply four high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter stations to interconnect France and Spain via a subsea cable across the Biscay Gulf.

The Biscay Gulf interconnection, labeled as project of common interest (PCI) at the European level, will consist of two HVDC links, with a converter station at each end of both systems. Combined, the links will efficiently supply a total of 2,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity at 400 kilovolts (kV) over 400 kilometers (km). Providing the equivalent of the power consumption of more than two million households1, the links will improve the safety, stability, and quality of the electricity supply between the two countries. It will advance the integration of emission-free electricity and create a more efficient system to generate savings that benefit consumers and the rest of Europe.2 Most of the link will be underwater, but a short section of the link cable route will return to land to avoid the deep Capbreton Canyon.

“Cross border, and often subsea, interconnections are vital to Europe’s increasingly interconnected grid,” said Niklas Persson, Managing Director at Hitachi Energy’s Grid Integration business. “Through our pioneering HVDC technology, we enable Inelfe to accelerate the two countries’ sustainability goals, improving the safety, stability, and quality of electricity supply between France and Spain and the rest of Europe.”

Inelfe (Interconexión Eléctrica Francia-España or Electricity Interconnection France-Spain) was set up following the 2008 Zaragoza Agreement, between the governments of Spain and France, with the mission to enhance the exchange of electricity between the two countries. The resulting infrastructure doubled the interconnection capacity between France and Spain from 1,400 MW to 2,800 MW today. With the Biscay Gulf interconnection, the capacity to exchange power will soon reach 5,000 MW.3

In line with its Purpose to champion the urgency of a clean energy transition through innovation and collaboration, Hitachi Energy is collaborating with VINCI, an industry leader in energy and construction. Together the two companies will provide an advanced solution for the Biscay Gulf project by delivering the engineering and power technologies and the construction of the converter stations. The collaboration with VINCI will leverage the core competencies of the two companies to deliver a best-in-class solution for the project.

County Seeks Partnership With Private Hospitals For Quality Health Service Delivery

Laikipia county government is seeking partnership with private health facilities in an effort to reduce medical flight in search of specialised treatment overseas.

Speaking during the official inauguration of Cottage Hospital, Nanyuki town branch, the area Governor Mr. Joshua Irungu said that the Public Private Partnership would ensure that residents access quality health services without travelling abroad to seek services that can be availed to them at an affordable rates.

‘I cannot deliver on my manifesto on efficient delivery of health services without partnership with others, not competition but the synergy complementing each other for the county and the nation. We have to get specialised treatment closer to the people to avoid them from seeking medical services abroad and yet we have the ability,’ said the governor

The governor said the majority of Kenyans were left in abject poverty as they sought medical treatment abroad including holding fundraising.

The county boss said that, with private hospitals’ advanced skills and medical equipment, they would develop a skills-based exchange programme aimed at ensuring residents access quality health care.

‘When we have cases, we can cooperate in sharing skills. You have equipment and advanced skills which our people might not be having. Let our surgeons come and learn, they will end up giving our people quality services,’ revealed Irungu.

Irungu further said that Public hospitals were not in competition with private hospitals but rather they were required to complement each other for quality of services.

Nanyuki Cottage Hospital Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr Anup Das said that, with the Public-Private partnership, it would ensure medics from public hospitals in Laikipia get internships and other specialised training aimed at delivering quality treatment to residents.

‘We are already discussing with the county government for Public-Private partnership on how we are able to help each other, specifically the Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital on how to ensure the community access affordable and quality health care,’ said Dr Das.

The CEO revealed that cottage hospital which is a level 5 facility is set to have an advanced Laparoscopy system for minimal access surgery which would ensure that patients get treatment without doing surgery.

Das said that the machine, which is one of a kind, would be the second such installation globally, the first being in India.

The CEO revealed that with the township outpatient hospital it would offer family medicine, general surgeries, physiotherapy ,optometrist and Ophthalmologist treatment among other medical services to low income earners in the county without digging deeper into their pocket amid tough high cost of living.

Meanwhile, every year, according to Ministry of Health (MOH) 2015-2020 report on Medical Tourism, it reveals that, majority of Kenyans travel to India, South Africa, United Kingdom and United State in search of treatment for cancer, renal ailment and other non-communicable diseases attributed to lack of specialised medical equipment and high treatment costs.

Mombasa Commemorates World Blood Donor Day

Kenya Tissue and Transplant Authority (KTTA) in conjunction with Kenya Red cross have commemorated the world blood donor day by organising a blood donation drive.

Every year on June 14, the world unites to celebrate World Blood Donor Day, a day dedicated to recognising and honouring the countless volunteers, organisations and blood banks that work tirelessly to ensure a steady supply of safe blood to those in need.

Millions of people around the world rely on blood donations to survive and recover from illnesses or injuries.

This year’s theme ‘Give blood, share life, share often” is set to remind the public of the incredible power we hold to make a difference.

‘This is to remind you of that patient that needs blood and that the only solution is blood so donating yours will always be of great help,’ Said Grace Nzilani from Coastal Region Blood Transfusion Center. (CRBTC)

Nzilani explained that donating blood does not only benefit patients in need and save lives but it also benefits the donors’ body because it gets rid of the old and worn out tissues hence paving way for new tissues to be formed in the body.

She also stated that regular blood donations help maintain healthy iron levels in the body that reduce the risk of hemochromatosis which protects the body against cardiovascular diseases and minimizes heart attack risks.

‘A patient should not wait for blood; blood should wait for patients’, Nzilani said.

Nzilani also stated with caution that the blood donated during the drive is meant to save lives not for sale.

‘Blood can’t be sold, there might be a rumor out there but if there is anyone out there selling blood, then that is illegal and that person is a criminal,’ Nzilani further explained.

‘The community needs to be educated, People are not aware that by donating, we are able to get enough time for screening so that the blood is ready when needed,’ said Keith Ziroh the County Blood Transfusion Coordinator.

Keith also said that they have an annual target of 25,150 units, 2006 monthly and 75 units of blood per day but have only managed to achieve 60% of the target.

Keith revealed that one is also able to acquire a donor’s card after donating blood which comes in handy when they need blood in future since it identifies the donor’s blood group.

Keith said that most donors who come forward do not possess Rhesus factor (O-) blood since it is scarce.

He urged people to come forward and donate blood rather than waiting when there’s a need for them to donate blood.

Residents Urged To Donate Blood To Save Lives

Busia County coordinator of blood transfusion services Anne Kiragu has asked the local residents to embrace the culture of blood donation with a view to save lives.

Addressing the press during the celebrations to mark the World blood donation day at Busia Polytechnic ground on Wednesday, Ms Kiragu noted that the community has not understood the need to donate blood.

‘We have been relying on schools and other learning institutions to provide blood,’ she said, adding that there was a need to sensitize the community to participate in the exercise.

Ms Kiragu explained that the blood is required in assisting cases of sickle cell and malaria patients which are rampant in the County.

‘There are also cases of accidents, especially boda boda riders which also require blood,’ she said.

She explained that blood donation is very healthy because it makes the bone marrow of the donors’ work better adding that it also reduces one’s chances of getting cancer disease.

‘Blood donation also helps one to know his/her status because we carry out tests,’ she said, adding that the process helps the donors to know their health status early.

The officer refuted allegations that blood is sold to patients, explaining that the organisation issues blood free of charge.

She at the same time dismissed myths by a section of residents that blood donated is used for devil worship.

The Busia blood satellite manager Nkule Samuel said that they have enough blood in the county currently with patients who are in the hospital being beneficiaries of the blood.

”If you come to our hospital, Busia county referral hospital, we have patients who are going for surgery and they all need the blood,’ he said.

Huduma Centres Praised For Offering Credible Services

Huduma centers have been praised for offering credible services that have suppressed corruption in the country.

Speaking during the celebrations to mark 10 years since the inception of Huduma centers in the country, Narok county commissioner Isaac Masinde said citizens are served faster, without being asked to pay any bribe for the services they get.

‘The Huduma centers have helped to build more trust among the civil service. They act as a one stop shop where people walk in and get all the government services under one roof,’ he said.

Commissioner Masinde asked the public servants to have a heart of service and serve the residents with passion without minding their backgrounds so as to develop the nation.

‘Please remember you are the servants of the people. Give services without discrimination and reflect the picture of the government by championing the government policies,’ he said.

The commissioner asked the civil servants attached to the Huduma Center to lead by example by holding tree planting forums where they will sensitize the residents on the importance of planting trees.

Gatobu Kirera, a member of the Huduma Kenya Secretariat said there is a strong partnership between the county and national government to deliver services at the Huduma center.

‘When a person enters the Huduma Center premises, he or she must be served with the services they need, whether the services are offered by the National government or County government it does not matter,’ he said.

He added they are looking for financial support to devolve their services to the villages so as to serve many people who cannot afford to travel to town.

Narok County Government Chief Officer in charge of Public Service Paul Karpuelo reiterated that the county government will continue supporting the Huduma Center so that people can get all services at one stop.

Karpuelo praised the Huduma centers saying they are more efficient than the traditional way of moving from one office to another to be served.

The Narok Huduma centre Manager Naserian Katampoi said there are 53 Huduma Centers spread across the country which have helped improve service delivery to the people.

She underscored the need to look back and see the far they have come and reflect on the ideals of the formation as an opportunity to look further so as to revolutionize the public service.

Farmers In Ndumberi Might Lose Their Crops Due To Monkey Invasion

Farmers in Ndumberi, Kiambu County are up in arms over a monkey invasion that has led to loss of food crops in their farms.

According to the residents, the monkeys have not only invaded their farms but also their human settlements. The locals stated that the monkeys have for the last two week been terrorizing them by destroying their maize, fruits and pawpaw crops

‘These monkeys are harvesting our immature maize corn which are 1 month to 2 months old and not yet ready for harvesting,’ Kimani Chirangu Kayai, a 55-year-old farmer living in the area told KNA.

He explained that farmers now have no option but to cut down the remains of the maize crops and feed to their cows.

The damage being caused by the monkeys, according to Chirangu, will see the area lose their harvest for the coming season. ‘Some of us will go hungry if this continues since the monkeys come very early in the morning and also in the evening,’ said Chriangu.

Chirangu said the area residents are asking the Kenya Wildlife Services to come to their rescue since they do not even know where the monkeys are emanating from.

‘We want KWS to return the monkeys to their natural habitat in the forests. More of them are coming from we don’t know where and not giving us peace especially at night as they keep on roaming and moving from roof to roof’,’ he said noting that their efforts to chase them away has been fruitless

‘I have an acre of land where I have planted fruits and sunflowers, if the monkey invasion continues, I will lose all the fruits on the farm,’ Chirangu said.

He asked KWS to come up with the best strategy of getting rid of the monkeys once and for all especially now that they are growing in number day by day.

Martha Thenya, an 80 year old woman also expressed concern of the monkey invasion in her only piece of land saying she had planted thee bags of maize seedlings in her farm and had bought several fertilizer bags to enhance her farm produce but it seems all will have gone to waste.

‘I have lived here many years and has never seen this. I have been forced now to buy catapults so that when I see the monkeys coming to my farm, I use it on them although the law does not allow us kill the wild animals,’ she said,

Speaking to KNA the Kenya Wildlife Service Warden in Ol Donyo Sabuk and who covers Kiambu area, Henry Kirinyet said that plans are being put in place to trap and capture the monkeys.

He noted that they will make sure the monkeys are cornered in order to contain the situation so that wildlife and humans are able to co-exist. ‘As KWS, we want to encourage Ndumberi farmers to use well secured bins that are monkey-proof and will not attract the monkeys,’ Kirinyet said.

He asked the residents to fasten their dustbin lids and also use flexible straps or bungee cord as well as ensure no food waste is left lying around homesteads since this will attract the monkeys.

According to experts, monkeys can also be kept away by using monkey traps and growing scented and therapeutic herbs and medicinal plants such as aloe vera which the monkeys dislike and do not consume.

2 Seychelles’ islands open for new hotel development, says IDC

The Islands Development Company (IDC) has launched expressions of interest for both foreign and local investors to present plans for tourism establishments on the Seychelles’ islands of Coetivy and Assumption.

The state-owned company’s chief executive, Glenny Savy, told reporters on Wednesday afternoon that the time is right as “IDC has now acquired a lease from the government and as it is developing the island that there would be a symbiotic relationship between tourism development and the agricultural development that will take place on Coetivy.”

“Coetivy is a wonderful place, a great site for a tourism development, something similar to Desroches island, so this is primarily the reason why we would like to develop something on Coetivy in tourism at the same time that we are doing agriculture,” he explained.

IDC is anticipating for a 50-bedroom to a 100-bedroom hotel to be built on the island.

Meanwhile, IDC has relaunched prawn production on Coetivy Island, which is expected to become one of the leading local contributors to the Seychelles’ blue growth agenda.

For the tourism project on Assumption Island, he said was that is to serve the Aldabra Atoll, one of the Seychelles’ UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as the atoll’s policy does not permit for such a development to take place there.

“Aldabra would not survive without the operations on Assumption where there is a base where planes land, among the many activities carried out by IDC. The idea is to try and develop a small centre on Assumption, which will be able to receive guests, who can then transit to Aldabra,” said Savy.

Assumption Island, located southwest of Mahe, is part of the Aldabra group and is managed by the Islands Development Company.

IDC launched an expression of interest for the construction of a 10-bedroom to a 40-bedroom hotel to cater for up to 90 persons for day trips to Aldabra and to return to the semi deserted island to sleep over.

“Assumption Island is very far away from here (Mahe) and it is costing us a significant amount of money every year to maintain the island and the upkeeping of the island,” said Savy.

It costs IDC SCR 10 million ($768,000) to maintain Assumption annually, he revealed.

The project on Assumption will allow IDC to reduce its operating overheads and cost on the island and “it will open Aldabra to a lot more people than there are today and bring in more revenue,” said Savy.

It was also revealed that the development plans on Coetivy will be comprehensive with farms and vanilla productions, in view that Astove and Cosmoledo islands are also not too far for the clients on the prospective hotel on Assumption to visit.

Now that the expression of interest has been launched, investors will have six months to submit their initial plans, while Savy predicted that it may take 24 to 30 months to complete the project – including its construction.
