Luanda: Angolan president Joo Louren§o participated on Tuesday in a high-level virtual meeting of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) and partners, dedicated to the Ebola epidemic affecting the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
According to Angola Press News Agency, a press release from the President's Press Office, the meeting held at the initiative of the African Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), allowed African leaders to assess the current epidemiological situation and the risks to public health in the affected countries, as well as the possibility of the disease spreading to other territories.
During the meeting, participants analyzed urgent measures to contain the outbreak, response financing mechanisms, cross-border coordination and monitoring instruments.
The Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda declared the Ebola epidemic in May. The outbreak occurs in a context marked by intense population and cross-border mobility, insecurity in the affected areas, humanitarian fragility, and the lack of vaccines or specific treatments for this variant of the virus.
Data indicate that the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda together have recorded 532 confirmed cases and 84 deaths.
