Ganzourgou: The 7th edition of National Tree Day (JNA) was celebrated in Ganzourgou province in the village of Kougri, commune of Zam. On this occasion, 1,000 medicinal tree seedlings were planted in the Wayen classified forest, covering an area of 2 hectares. The event was attended by administrative and customary authorities, along with numerous guests.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the ceremony was held under the theme "Medicinal plants: source of health and climate resilience for communities," and was graced by the presence of the Governor of the Oubri region, Ms. Sy Ass©tou Barry, the High Commissioner of Ganzourgou, Ms. Aminata Sorgho/Gouba, and economic operator Cl©ment Kabor©. In her address, the High Commissioner commended the efforts of active groups such as the VDP, Koglw©ogo groups, and the "Wayignans" for their dedication to restoring the vegetation cover. She emphasized the historical significance of the Wayen classified forest, a 12,000-hectare site protected since 1941, which now faces threats from destructive practices like excessive logging, gold panning, and stray animals.
The High Commissioner highlighted the therapeutic benefits of the planted trees, which can treat ailments such as diabetes, urinary tract infections, and hemorrhoids. Provincial director of water and forests of Ganzourgou, Sayouba Sigu©, remarked on the significance of planting over 1,000 medicinal plants with carbon sequestration capabilities, expressing optimism about the positive impact on the climate and environment in Kougri. He encouraged the local population to maintain the plants and announced the formation of a dedicated committee for this purpose.
The High Commissioner reiterated that this year's strategy aligns with the "patriotic hour to green Faso," an initiative by the nation's top leaders. This inclusive approach has led to planting over a million seedlings in Ganzourgou, positioning it as a national leader in reforestation efforts. The event also featured the distribution of eco-friendly bags to the women of Kougri, promoting the reduction of plastic bag usage. The village chief, traditional practitioners, and the President of the Zam special communal delegation, St©phanie Tenin Lonfo/Soma, expressed their support for the initiative and urged for the sustainable management of forest resources.
