Lisbon: Health Minister Slvia Lutucuta on Wednesday presented the advances and national strategy regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and telemedicine in Angola, during the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Conference taking place in Lisbon, Portugal.
According to Angola Press News Agency, a press release notes that the minister highlighted the commitment to technological innovation, digital health, and the expansion of telemedicine, placing technology at the service of the people and the strengthening of the National Health System.
While speaking on a panel dedicated to the opportunities and challenges of AI in healthcare, the minister explained that Angola is making structural investments in connectivity to ensure systems are efficient, secure, inclusive, and accessible. Among the key advances presented, she highlighted the implementation of the "DHIS2" system as the national platform for health data management.
She noted that the system enables the integration of various information databases, the creation of analytical dashboards, and enhanced monitoring of health indicators, thereby contributing to evidence-based decision-making. Regarding medical care, Slvia Lutucuta highlighted the expansion of the National Telemedicine Network, which is currently integrated into an international collaborative network involving institutions in Portugal, Italy, Brazil, India, the United States, and South Africa.
It was explained that this cooperation has enabled expanded access to specialist consultations, a reduction in service access inequalities, and the delivery of specialized care closer to populations living in the country's most remote areas. The statement highlighted the creation of the Public Health Emergency Operations Center (COESP)-a technological platform that allows for real-time monitoring of the epidemiological situation across the country, thereby strengthening mechanisms for surveillance, prevention, and rapid response to health emergencies.
Angola will continue, the statement added, to invest in AI as a strategic tool to support clinical decision-making, strengthen epidemiological surveillance, optimize health service planning, and expand universal access to quality care. Angola's participation in the WHO conference reinforces international recognition of the progress the country has made in the digital transformation of healthcare and underscores its commitment to innovation, cooperation, and the development of a modern, resilient, equitable, and people-centered system, the statement concluded.
