Two Bodies Recovered From Boat Tragedy Scene

Police from Madogo police station, Tana River County this morning recovered two bodies from the scene of last month’s boat tragedy that claimed seven lives.

Talking to KNA on phone, Bangale sub-county deputy commissioner Joseph Kipkorir said that the decomposed bodies could be part of those who drowned on April 28th.

The bodies bring to nine the number of people who have drowned since two sections of the Garissa – Madogo road were washed away.

‘The two bodies were found floating by members of the public who immediately informed the police. We suspect the two were part of the persons still missing from the boat tragedy,’ Kipkorir said.

According to the DCC, security agencies are still combing the scene of the boat tragedy in search of more bodies, ‘ he noted.

It’s alleged that the ill-fated boat had over 40 passengers on board. At least 23 were rescued and over 10 could still be missing.

Madogo MCA Juma Ali however differed with the administrator alleging that the duo drowned while trying to cross the f
looded Kona punda section of the road.

‘From my observation, the deceased drowned two days ago. It seems one went in to assist the other but unfortunately, they both drowned,’ Juma said.

‘We found an ID from one of deceased indicating one of them is from Mbooni. Sh1300 were recovered from his pockets. I don’t understand why he did not use the money to pay for a boat that is charging Sh300,’ he added.

A resident who requested anonymity claimed that the two were trying to wade through the floods when they drowned.

Farmers In Kericho Trained On Modern Livestock Breeding

Over 50 farmers from Kericho East, Bureti, Soin-Sigowet, and Belgut sub-counties benefitted from a day-long training on modern livestock breeding to enhance productivity thus enhancing their lives financially.

The Kericho County Department of Agriculture in collaboration with CKL Africa Limited a principal supplier of animal health and crop farming sensitised the livestock farmers on ways to increase production and productivity through improved breeding such as Artificial Insemination and selective breeding, disease management, and nutrition.

CKL Africa official Benson Landa educated the farmers who a majority of them reared cattle for milk, to focus on selective breeding and use high-quality rams to significantly improve the health, size, and productivity of their livestock which in turn would increase profitability and sustainability.

‘Maintaining clean, spacious and well-ventilated housing conditions is crucial for the health and well-being of the animals and ensuring that animals are housed appropriat
ely based on their age, sex, and developmental stage which helps to prevent disease and promote better growth, ‘added Landa.

The farmers were also enlightened on modern techniques of rearing calves from birth till maturity, and they learned how to minimize stress on the calves which can affect immunity and also ensure a smooth transition from liquid to solid food.

‘When it comes to disease prevention and management, calves can easily be infected with various diseases such as septicaemia bacterial infection, diarrhea, and pneumonia, and it is vital to quickly contact a veterinary doctor to treat the calf,’ said Landa

Landa advised the farmers to control tick-borne diseases such as ECF from infecting the calves saying that ticks are responsible for the transmission of a large variety of diseases that affect livestock including babesiosis, anaplasmosis, theileriosis, and heart water.

‘The best control program is to reduce immature cattle tick numbers on the paddock by planned treatments which kill the egg-la
ying female ticks by treating cattle for 4-5 consecutive tick life cycles depending on the length of the tick season,’ said Landa

Farmers were also urged to prevent pneumonia by providing proper hygienic housing for the calves by avoiding wet floors, and disinfecting calf pens adding that the common symptoms to watch out for include coughing, difficulty in breathing, and fever.

During the seminar, the farmers were trained on how to feed their heifers from 6 to 18 months with good quality fodder such as chopped, dark green, and one meter Napier grass among other products that would provide protein and energy.

For pregnant heifers, farmers were urged to continue feeding them well until the last 4 to 6 months of the cow’s pregnancy when they can introduce supplementation to build up reserves for use in the period of high milk production and the growth and repair of the udder tissue.

Farmers were excited to learn ways of increasing milk production through the provision of clean water continuously with an adeq
uate flow rate, feeding them at least six times a day, ensuring the cows are comfortable in their shed and have no diseases, and milking them properly.

Tunisia-Spain: Sustainable socio-economic programme launched in Médenine and Sfax

A programme called “Sustainable Socio-Economic Opportunities for Women and Young People in the Governorates of Medenine and Sfax,” was launched on Thursday, May 16, at the «South Techno Park» of Médenine.

The «Qima» programme, funded by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), seeks to promote the integration of women and young green entrepreneurs into value chains in Medenine and Sfax, according to the Spanish Cooperation and Research foundation (CIDEAL), which is leading the project with its Tunisian partners.

More particularly, it aims to support stable and sustainable income-generating opportunities by developing innovative agricultural value chains, consolidating professional skills as well as fostering collaboration between public and private actors.

«The priority value chains selected in Medenine and Sfax, as part of the programme will offer real opportunities to 855 Tunisian women and young people in an effort to encourage entrepreneurship and strengthen the economy a
t local and national levels,» according to the same source.

In Médenine, the fig sector could be promoted through several products: Gharbouz (dried figs found mainly in the south of Tunisia and more specifically in Beni Khedache), Chriha (dried fig), robb (molasses), jam, fig-based pastry products, fig juice…)

It also concerns the beekeeping and glass sectors for the packaging of final products as well as the production of fodder using innovative techniques, hydroponics which will make it possible to develop production in a region facing a shortage of water and high temperatures as well as meet the food needs of the area, particularly in the camel value chain.

The programme is also destined to support the socio-professional integration in economic growth sectors, complementary to value chains. More precisely, it will benefit vulnerable Tunisian women and young people by offering technical assistance, planning entrepreneurial projects and facilitating access to the job market.

In the Governorate of Sfax,
the identified value chain is pepper. This product could be valorized through by-products, including jams and sauces which help preserve the raw material for a long time without losing its nutritional properties.

In the same region, the programme plans to encourage the use of aromatic and medicinal plants to create perfumes, oils and ointments and then export them to international markets.

Donkey Owners Want Their Animals Protected From Theft

As the world celebrates the Donkey Welfare Day on 17 May, donkey owners in Narok are hopeful that the authorities will address rampant theft of the animal across the county.

Mama Nalaidiki Yendo, the chairlady of a donkey farmers’ association dubbed ‘Eshipai Esera’ said donkey theft had escalated in the county that makes them remain vigilant at night to protect their animals.

She reiterated that the beast of burden is a precious animal to the Maa women as they use it to carry out their domestic cores and earn a living from it.

‘The donkey is everything to us. It is our source of income and we commonly refer to it as a co-wife because it is always with us,’ she said, adding that donkeys help them transport luggage to the markets during rainy seasons, when the roads are impassable and trek for long distances to fetch water during prolonged dry spells.

She lauded the Brooke organization that works through Farming System Kenya to improve the welfare of donkeys by educating the farmers on how best to take care
of their animals so that they can be free from diseases and parasites.

Mama Yendo invited all donkey farmers to ‘Uhuru market’ on Friday to celebrate their day, where they will be taught how to care of their donkeys by officers from the veterinary services.

Samuel Chege an officer with the Farming System Kenya said they began working with donkey farmers in the county since 2016 where they have been training the farmers on animal husbandry.

The organization has also trained local service providers who help to treat donkeys in the villages in case they are sick.

Chege said the project has not only benefited the women but also men where they teach team livelihood skills that have helped them better their lives.

‘Among the projects we have implemented in the county are: digging water pans for the community, distributing pasture seedlings to farmers and training women groups on financial matters,’ he said.

The donkey welfare day is an important day to help us celebrate the beast of burden and the good work t
hat it does to improve lives in the society.
